Gosick keeps to a tried-and-true formula in which a cold but brilliant detective is teamed with a truthful but somewhat dark buddy who constantly a few hints behind the audience.
The story of this
anime is full of mystery and adventure mixed with drama and comedy. Almost all the characters in the series are interesting. In the case of Gosick, the Holmes stand-in is Victorique, the inhabitant eccentric at the Saint Marguerite Academy in Sauville, a fictional European country, while the Watson surrogate is
Kazuya Kujo, the school’s sole Japanese student.
Victorique and Kazuya meet for the first time after the latter becomes an unexpected witness - and suspect - in the murder of a certain government official. Her reputation for deductive reasoning leads the nearby town’s pretty-boy inspector to seek her advice whenever there’s a murder – which, given the size and geographical remoteness of the town, occurs with rather alarming frequency.
In the course of investigating a fortune teller’s death, Victorique and Kazuya board the Queen Berry, a ship which supposedly sank ten years earlier with a cargo of murdered children. The two endure a night of extreme violence and seemingly supernatural events as they comb the ship for clues about the old woman’s past. These scenes play like Ten Little Indians crossed with Battle Royale: the ship’s other passengers visit horrific deaths on one another, usually with sharp objects or booby traps. Interspersed with the carnage – which, despite my description, is pretty tame – are numerous conversations in which Victorique patiently debunks the notion that the Queen Berry is haunted, culminating in the kind of “if it wasn’t for those meddling kids I would have had my revenge!”
Gosick Characters:
Victorique de Blois
She takes over surprising detective abilities, babyish, excessively strange and fond of sweets. She normally remains in the library of the Saint Marguerite Academy.
Kazuya Kujo
He at once constructs a mark at the students, who suspect him of carrying bad luck to the school due to his physical appearance. By some changes of destiny, he becomes a messenger and fellow to the most uncommon pupil in the school, Victorique de Blois.
Grevil de Blois
He can be absolutely famous for his drill-like hairstyle, and is normally seen visiting Victorique de Blois to refer for cases he handled. He works as an inspector in Sauville's police department.
Cordelia Gallo
She is the mother of Victorique and was a defendant of killing the present verdict elder Theodore at the age of 15. She is later carried to a medical institution, where she would stay for a few years. Ultimately, she was to be saved by Brian Roscoe, and she would join him on his journeys.
Avril Bradley
She is much slighter smooth, as showed when she wolfs down several sandwiches after a few days without food as Kuiaran's captive. He tours to Sauville from her home in Britain to enter in Saint Marguerite Academy.
Brian Roscoe
He has been a roving entertainer, normally showing his tricks to groups of people in public places. The magician is later seen in more events related to Victorique after Kazuya sees him organizing for a performance in Saubreme entitled Fantasmagorie.
Cecile Lafitte
She seizes an immature mood and an interest in the supernatural. She is also a teacher at Saint Marguerite Academy.
