The history of AnoHana plays in the present and uses numerous flashbacks to the past. Reference is made again and again closer to certain details that make the protagonists of the story itself to the accusation of being responsible for Menmas death.
The childhood of five friends is marred by the death of Meiko Honma, nicknamed "Menma", their playmate. Now the kids have grown up and go to school, but are no longer friends. Suddenly Jinta Yadomi, called "Jintan", who had been the leader of the group, begins to see the ghost of his little friend of many years ago. Meiko seems to want to communicate only with him and want Jinta will grant a wish that she had when she was a child, but which has been forgotten.
Jinta "Jintan" Yadomi
Jintan is the main character of the series. In the past, he was a young energetic boy and self-proclaimed leader of the Super Peace Busters. In reality, he sought a pretext to hide from everyone the love he vowed to Menma. The next day, he just wanted to apologize to her, it was found drowned. Since the accident, Jintan did not mourn his girlfriend and resigned on his person. Unable to forgive, he spent the rest of his childhood in a constant state of sadness and depression that had an impact on his future. 10 years pass, he becomes a Hikikomori, a person who remains cloistered at home by social phobia, because of a failure to take an entrance examination in a high school as he desired, and which study Yukiatsu and Tsuruko.
Meiko "Menma" Honma
Menma is the spectrum of the little girl died of drowning a few years ago, which appears to Jintan. Innocent, cheerful, always smiling even in difficult situations, it unbearable conflict and often looking for a way to dissolve the tension when something goes wrong, as encourage everyone to have fun, forget the misunderstandings, etc.. It does not seem to have an ounce of negativity. She is full of energy.
Naruko "Anaru" Anjou
Anaru is a childhood friend of Jintan and Menma. Although it displays a cold attitude towards Jintan, she is secretly in love with him and has been small. Anaru admits she was jealous of Menma when they were children. Lacking insurance because of her glasses and her curly hair, she desperately wanted to have straight hair Menma.
Atsumu "Yukiatsu" Matsuyuki
Yukiatsu is a childhood friend of Jintan, though he was always jealous of him, and always going after him. He was madly in love with Menma. When he learned that one could see Menma Jintan, Yukiatsu was so depressed that he himself decides to dress up as Menma.
Chiriko "Tsuruko" Tsurumi
Tsuruko is a friend of Jintan, it is very close to Yukiatsu, in fact she loves him, but he never noticed. It's a smart girl but can not help envying Anaru that comes with Yukiatsu.
Tetsudo "Poppo" Hisakawa
Poppo is a bright boy who loves to travel, it is the first to have thought Jintan when it saw Menma. He is always happy and laugh often. He loves to invite to eat at Jintan home after returning from his travels he lived in the secret base "Super buster peaceful".
