Lycra Catsuits

Lycra® is the trade name for spandex produced since 2004 by Invista (introduced in 1958 by DuPont ). It is  a synthetic fiber of high elasticity technically known as spandex. It is a fiber widely used in the manufacture of trousers, swimsuits or swimwear, belts and bikinis, fitness or gym clothes and social in general. Also there are uses in industry: for example, in the manufacture of gloves for the handling of parts that can not be in contact with the skin of the hands (eg. electronic components or parts with a polished surface, such as faucet).

The first came in 1959 as spandex fibers Fibre K on the market after Joseph Shivers at the American chemical company DuPont developed a method for large-scale production. It was bonded multifilament yarn of polyurethane. From 1962, Fibre K in large quantities under the brand Lycra sold, which is held in Germany since January 28, 2005 by the company Invista. Two years later began Bayer AG with the production of Dorlastan, a multifilament yarn from polyester. Other trademarks are creora (Hyosung), Elaspan (Invista) and Linel (Fillattice).

Production
For commercial definition is based on a synthetic fiber spandex elastomeric continuous filament consists of at least 85% of the mass of polyurethane segmented. It is produced by extruding the polyurethane melt or solution through a spinneret into a spinning plant.

Main applications
The polyurethane fiber is characterized by a hand that does not make it suitable to be used as such, so it is always used in accompaniment naked or covered (spiraling) or disheveled air, with other fibers continuous or discontinuous.

Spandex catsuit is mostly used for clothing that needs to be very flexible or fit. Above all, it has therefore established itself in sportswear, underwear and socks. For the sake of wearing comfort but it is always mixed with other fiber types.

For clothing, spandex is usually mixed with cotton or polyester, and accounts for a small percentage of the final fabric, which therefore retains most of the look and feel of the other fibers. In North America it is rare in men's clothing, but prevalent in lycra catsuits for women. An estimated 80% of clothing sold in the United States contained spandex in 2010.
