The series is about Sumimura Yoshimori and Yukimura Tokine, heirs to two rival clans of the art nuclear kekkai (magic barrier), they must defend their school of Ayakashi (demons) who are seeking the mysterious powers hidden under the school field as it is built on one of the shinyuuchi which are considered sacred ground.
Long ago, demons attacked, the Ayakashi, a prince in order to steal his magical powers and rule the world. But the monk Tokimori Hazama held the demons. When the prince died, he sealed his power in Karasumori. Both of his students watched it now, that the power Ayakashi not torn itself. They made use of their magic arts, "Kekkai" in the fight against the demons. The Kekkai are magical shields, with which the demons and ghosts captured and can be destroyed.
Five hundred years later to protect the descendants of the two students as Kekkaishi Karasumori yet. From them came the two families and Sumimura Yukimura, who is now fighting for the title but the legitimate successor of the monk.
The 14-year-old Yoshimori Sumimura, heir to the Sumimura dominated, very strong Kekkai can deal with these, however poorly. Although he really wanted to be a Kekkaishi, after he developed during his childhood experiences with Ayakashi Tokine especially against a strong protective instinct. He is assisted in the hunt demons from the demon dog Madarao, can detect the Ayakashi. This is over 500 years old.

Yoshimori Sumimura
He is portrayed as a lazy, stubborn, stubborn but strives to protect his family and friends, especially Tokine, for whom he has feelings for since childhood. Tokine is endowed with great accuracy and precision, however, his kekkai is rather weak and can not be maintained for only short periods of time.
Gen Shishio
Shishio help Tokine and Yoshimori in hunting and the protection of Ayakashi Karasumori. This is a semi-Ayakashi (Ayakashi majiri), which means it can convert some or all of its body Ayakashi.
Masamori Sumimura
Despite being the oldest of three brothers, Masamori has not been chosen as heir, which has always been a source of mystery to him and Yoshimori. The latter saying repeatedly in the series, in terms of skill and power, Masamori should have taken the position as heir apparent.
Shichirou Ougi
He's the Legitimate successor for the Ougi clan (a clan of hired assassins under the current employ of the Sousui) and has killed his brothers and several members of the Shadow Organization before escaping Masamori.
Sen Kagemiya
He is rescued by Yoshimori and helps (albeit briefly) in the following fight against Kaguro. It is implied that he was jealous of how strong Gen was, since he states that in battle he was always staring at Gen's back.
