It was 1986. Anime action takes place in the time between October 4 and 5, on an isolated island called Rokkenjima at the annual meeting of the family. Kinzo Ushiromiya, head of the family that owns the island, quietly living out their days on it. The friendly small talks were forgotten and replaced the struggle for succession. Unexpected typhoon destroys all the plans, and locks all the people on the island. Here then begins a series of mysterious deaths that are not able to escape one of 18 people.
The series follows Kinzo's grandson, Battler, as he tries to outwit Beatrice by proving that she doesn't exist. Similar to its predecessor, the anime consists of several arcs, each beginning similarly but ending in different ways. The first four arcs are the Question Arcs, where the puzzles are presented to the reader. Instead of outright Answer Arcs, the last four arcs are the Core Arcs, which provide the reader several hints on how to solve the murders, but without outright giving away the answer.
Umineko No Naku Koro Ni Characters:
Battler Ushiromiya
He is extremely willful and does not believe in Beatrice or magic at all. He is a son of Rudolf and Asumu and 7th in the line of succession. After Asumu died six years ago, he became angry with his father for remarrying Kyrie so fast and went to live with his maternal grandparents. Because of this, he's been fairly out of the loop as to the affairs of the Ushiromiya family. Often, he is teased about being similar to his father for his tendency to try to grope girls.
Maria Ushiromiya
She has an upset relationship with her mother and thus became absorbed in the occult as a way to cope. She is notable for her repeated catch phrase, a sort of whining as well as her very creepy laugh.
Jessica Ushiromiya
She has a set of burden put on her by Natsuhi, being the first heir after Kinzo's sons and daughters. She falls in love with Kanon.
George Ushiromiya
He has been working as a junior worker at his father's company, but hopes to eventually be able to own his own business. He falls in love with Shannon against his mother's wishes.
Eva Ushiromiya
She has a lot of jealousy against her older brother, Krauss, and has a rivalry with his wife, Natsuhi. She is also the wife of Hideyoshi. In order to keep her placement in the line of successors, she married Hideyoshi and had him adopt the name of "Ushiromiya."
Rosa Ushiromiya
She is a mother of Maria and fourth in the line of succession. Although Battler describes her as a calming figure, her relationship with Maria is very troubled.
Natsuhi Ushiromiya
She is nether a lot of difficulty, since it is her and Krauss's responsibility to take care of both Kinzo and the house, and yet she married into the Ushiromiya family, putting her at a fairly low rank on the hierarchy.
Kyrie Ushiromiya
She is known to have a very strong "flip-the-chessboard" mentality about how to tackle problems, and indeed, seems to have inspired Battler's own.
Shannon
She is a very sweet and shy girl who shares Kanon's belief in their furniture status within the Ushiromiya household.
Kanon
He maintains the belief that servants are to be nothing but furniture in the Ushiromiya mansion, which initially hinders him from having a relationship with Jessica. He and Shannon act like brother and sister, although they are not related by blood.
Ange Ushiromiya
She was only six in 1986, and didn't go to Rokkenjima with the rest of her family due to flu. The one we see has grown up in the world that stems from the third arc. She started to learn some magic from Maria.
Juza Amakusa
He was assigned to guard Ange by Eva, but was later fired because he was flirting with her. He is apparently blacklisted in France.
Beatrice
She claims to have given Kinzo all of his wealth, and so when the family is gathered, she issues them a challenge: find the gold that Kinzo hid in the Ushiromiya estate, or else she would collect it, with their lives as interest. She is also known as the Golden Witch and the Endless Witch, she is the main antagonist of the series.
Bernkastel
She is a mysterious figure which offers Battler her help in defeating Beatrice during the tea parties for nonhuman. She has the power to create miracles as long as the possibility of the event occurring is greater than 0.
Lambdadelta
Formerly, the most powerful witch in the universe, she now harbors an intense grudge against Bernkastel, who took that title away from her. She sometimes offers Battler help during the tea parties for nonhuman, and yet half the time appears to be working against him.
Virgilia
She is the former Endless Witch/Beatrice, and Beatrice's mentor who taught her all about magic. Although she dislikes how Beatrice uses the power she has been bestowed, she is, nonetheless, loyal to her student and works to help Beatrice achieve victory.
Eva-Beatrice
The way she describes her ability is the power to turn anger into miracles. She appears as a younger version of Eva and is, in some sense, an embodiment of Eva's desires and lack of satisfaction of her place in the family and in general.
Featherine Augustus Aurora
She claims to have reached a certain level of truth, allowing her to write stories on par with the original two message bottles that washed up. She is the Witch of Theatergoing, Drama, and Spectating. It is strongly implied that Toya is Featherine, or at least Featherine is her Author Avatar.
Erika Furudo
She is the piece set by Bernkastel on the board of Rokkenjima. A cute young detective who happens to wash up on the shore of an island with an impending murder mystery. She calls herself an "Intellectual Rapist."
Lion Ushiromiya
She has an androgynous appearance, and nobody seems to know what their gender actually is. Lion teams up with Willard H. Wright in his investigation of Beatrice's death.
Gaap
She is cheerful and rather arrogant. She is quite good friends with Beatrice and apparently a bit of a fashion. She loves to tease Virgilia, and tends to shorten her friends' names, only using the last syllable or two.
Zepar and Furfur
Zepar is the "hunter" of love who presents an ultimate defensive barrier of immortality upon the contractor, while Furfur is the "trainer" of love who bestows an endless, tireless offensive power upon the contractor.
The Stakes of Purgatory
They are Seven sisters and articles of furniture who serve Beatrice. Each arises to kill those who are guilty of the sin she represents. They are Lucifer of Pride, Leviathan of Envy, Satan of Wrath, Belphegor of Sloth, Mammon of Greed, Beelzebub of Gluttony, and Asmodeus of Lust.
Sakutaro
She eventually puts a soul into it, and he takes the form of a young boy with lion ears wearing a shirt that is way too big for him.
Clair Vauxof Bernard
She serves under Bernkastel with the sole purpose of reading her latest game.
Eiserne Jungfrau
They use Knox's Decalogue in order to bring "heretics" to justice. They serve as furniture under Erika. They are Gertrude, Dlanor and Cornelia.
